On the Story of The Happy Prince by Oscar Wild (Chapter 3)

Iryna Wojtiuk is a  teacher of English in the Primary School nr.1 in Żary, Poland

Class: Students of  year 3+

Age: 8-9 years old+

Time: 45 min + 45 min.

Pupils will learn in the lesson:

  •           scanning of the text and finding out information
  •           substituting the information in the story and producing a new version of it
  •           names of birds
  1. Pupils are presented with a new chapter of the story on the piece of paper, which is wrapped in a paper ball. They see some words and pictures from the story. Their task is to suggest what may happen in the next chapter of the story. Pupils are not allowed to unwrap their ball yet.

  1. Next they unwrap the ball, scan the text and check if their suppositions were similar as in the text. They render shortly what they understood.

  1. The class is divided into teams. Each team gets a paper skirt (piece of paper cut into stripes). A sentence in their mother tongue is written on each of them. Their task is to find the English equivalents of the sentences from the text and circle them in the story. Each time they have found the sentence, they come to the board for another stripe of  the paper skirt.

  1. Children render new facts from the story they have found out. As the children understand the story now, we all try to make out why the author chose a swallow to help the Happy Prince.

    In pairs children try to make a list of 5-7 birds that don’t stay for winter and translate them into English using dictionaries and with the help of a teacher.
  1. Pupils try to imagine and present their ideas
  • what would change in the story if they replace the swallow by another bird that wouldn’t have to leave the city because of cold weather;
  • what would happen if they replace the Happy Prince by somebody else (for ex. a policeman, a thief, a child, a businessman, a priest).

The task of each pair of children would be to choose the 2 characters by which the Happy Prince and the swallow will be replaced in the story, change their conversation and present a new conversation to the class.
