ISSN 1755-9715

Editorial

Dear HLT Readers,

Welcome to the October issue of HLT,

In this issue you will find news about Pilgrims,  the way we are moving forward and are looking ahead into the future - The Pilgrims Conference: An Amazingly Constructive Event! by  Till Gins, Lead Officer.

There are also some Pilgrims memories; we are looking back in The Canterbury Ghosts by  Danny Singh, Meeting Mario by Adrian Underhill, and information about a very special event: Can We Still Humanise Language Teaching? An Event to Honour the Memory of Mario Rinvolucri which was organised by TESOL Macedonia Thrace, Greece.

There was a plan that the October 2025 issue of HLT would be devoted to teaching business English, or what John Hughes calls ‘work English’. Despite efforts to engage members of IATEFL BSIG we got few contributions. However, what we have managed to harvest, I am sure, will be of great value to those of you who teach business English or ‘work English’.

The Business section here are articles by Jelena Perišić: Teaching Business English: Paths and Possibilities and by John Hughes Writing Materials for Business English.

There are some practical ideas in the article Fluency Activities for Small Talk in Business English by John Hughes, 10 ideas from ETpedia Business English from Pavilion, and A Golden Classic: Tree Swing Cartoons by Hanna, Kryszewska.

There are also book reviews related to business English: One-to-One: An Updated and Practical Guide to Teaching. A New Addition to Your CPD Collection review by Oksana Hera, Business Impact. Business English Modules from DELTA Publishing with a short review by Hanna Kryszewska, and 50 Ways to Teach Business English, Tips for ESL/EFL Teachers by Marjorie Rosenberg, with a link that will lead you to a preview of the book, with a generous free sample of 27 pages to be enjoyed by you!

As for the other sections in this issue, there are texts on listening (Listening Beyond Audio: Multimedia Design to Support ESL Listening Comprehension by Abeer Ali Al Owaisi) and speaking (New Research Explores British ‘Polite-isms’ and Their Impact on Communication by Ben Beaumont, Accent or Acting? Our Ability to Spot a Fake by Nigel Balfour, and A Cognitive Autonomy Approach to Preparing Learners for the Cambridge Proficiency in English Speaking Exam by Ryan Simpson).

For your own CPD (Continuous Professional Development), I am sure you will enjoy reading  How A.I. Will change the Entire Structure of Civilisation: The Need for a New Design of Education by Roy Andersen, and From Burnout to Balance: Building a Teaching Business That Actually Supports Your Well-being by Rachael Roberts.

This issue is jam-packed with practical activities in the Lesson Outlines section: English Should Not Be Taught Like It’s Physics: Rethinking How We Teach Beginner Level Learners by Edem Dogbey, Co-Teaching Language Anchors in Grade 9: A Story of Shared Practice and Student Voice by Wyndell R. Williams,  Using AI Images in the Classroom by Jamie Keddie, A Structure for Successful Conversation in the ESL Classroom: Food - Teacher’s Guide by Anthony Page and Mark Stoneburgh, Thoughtful Activities by Paul Dummett, and Taboos in Teaching English – The Question of Why and How? by Julia Ochocińska. Note you can download Julia’s book from here.

Our regular columns offer a lot of content, too; ECO Issues recommend two publications -  Love Our Planet from Usborne and Leadership for Sustainability: Saving the planet one school at a time from Crown House Publishing, EMBR.ACE Education presents Holistic Wellbeing in Action by Effie Kyrikaki, and the C Group gives you a Review of Using Wisdom Stories in Language Teacher Education by Alan Maley reviewed by  Chang Liu.

In the Publications section, you can find more publications (Halloween Reading Club from OUP, Women in ELT from Pavilion, and DELTA News) and recommendations of  new titles: 10+1 Reasons Why you Should Read How to Write Mediation Activities reviewed by Rachel Tsateri,  Professors at Play reviewed by Hall Houston.

Enjoy the October issue!
